Hernia Advanced Training Program

There has been an exponential increase in surgical techniques for hernia repairs in the recent past.  Abdominal wall reconstruction has added a new dimension to hernia repair.  Several newer hernia repairs are aggressive, maximally invasive and therefore prove to more serous sequalae and complications.   A rational coherent approach based on best evidence is the need of the hour.

Introduction

Asia Pacific Hernia Society (APHS) is a vibrant and active surgical society that provides a professional forum to spread the art and science of safe and contemporary hernia practice.

The Asia Pacific region comprises a vast multitude of different nationalities with different and often widely disparate surgical training curriculums, socioeconomic factors and consequently surgical practices.  In such a scenario, there is a need to inform and educate surgeons about standard and best hernia practices that are based on currently available international guidelines.

Objective

The aim of the course is to introduce and familiarise surgeon participants who are engaged in and practising basic hernia repair procedures (Lichtenstein repair, TEP/ TAPP, IPOM / Plus procedures) to advanced hernia procedures.  This course is intended as a gateway for surgeons wishing to upgrade their skills in hernia repair.  The course content includes Hiatal and
Diaphragmatic hernias, Abdominal wall repair techniques (eTEP, Anterior / Posterior component separation, Botox), Hybrid hernia repairs, peripheral hernias and complications.  Additionally, participants are introduced to the Principles of Newer hernia repair procedures (SCOLA, LIRA, TARM, MILOS, Ventral TAPP, Peritoneal Flap, Robotic approaches and Adjunct procedures.

The Hernia Advanced training programme is pyramidal course, with three necessary and interdependent components, with a broad based, informative didactics component, (about 60 participants), restricted Practical component (about 20-25 participants) and Fellowship component (on application).  Participants will be expected to follow the programme in line with the pyramidal structure to enable their knowledge and awareness to develop with attendance and progression at each stage of the training.

On completion of all 3 components, participants would be awarded Diploma in Hernia Advanced from APHS at the Annual Conference.
