I am privileged and honored to be addressing you as President of Asia Pacific Hernia Society (APHS).
The APHS was founded in Bali in 2004 by a group of like minded hernia enthusiasts .The vibrant energy, untiring efforts and single minded pursuit from the Founder members and past Presidents were responsible to create a strong and vibrant APHS as it exists today. The Asia Pacific region represents a majority of mankind inhabiting the Earth with tremendous diversity of populations, regions, cultures, faiths and habits. The APHS strives to be a symbol of this diversity yet unified to advance the art and safe practice of herniology.
The National Chapters of APHS are the driving forces that provide momentum and substance to the academic activities of APHS. The Annual APHS Congress remains the flagship event of APHS to showcase regional expertise and also present and deliberate on best hernia practices. The forthcoming Annual Congresses of APHS are scheduled for Tokyo (2016) and Kaohsiung (2017) .The Hernia Journal is now the official journal of APHS that continues to receive support patronage and significant contributions from APHS members.
The Hernia essentials (HE) training program is the first formal training activity of APHS.The training course is comprehensive (open and laparoscopy, groin and ventral/ incisional ) and structured on current international guidelines on hernia management (EHS, APHS, SAGES, IEHS and HerniaSurge guidelines) HE training programs launched in 2017 have been warmly received and greatly appreciated in Shanghai (February) , Manila (March) and Ho Chi Minh (April). Several more training programs are scheduled this year on request of many national hernia societies affiliated to APHS.
We are pleased to share an excellent synergistic relationship with our Industry partners. APHS recognizes and appreciates the invaluable contribution of our Industry partners to expand surgical frontiers as also to facilitate education and training of surgeons.
We, at APHS remain committed to advance a better understanding of the mechanisms and treatment of hernia and to facilitate optimal training techniques to achieve this objective.
