The Hernia Essentials (HE) is an APHS accredited hernia training course based on current international guidelines (EHS, APHS, SAGES, IEHS and HerniaSurge guidelines) on hernia management. The aim is to present a structured and comprehensive training course for practicing surgeons on hernia management (both laparoscopic and open). A standard and uniform course content has been created that will be delivered by APHS faculty at various locations within the Asia Pacific Region.

The mission of Asia Pacific Hernia Society (APHS) is to provide a professional forum for education and exchange of information on diagnosis and management of abdominal wall hernias. The vision of APHS is to impart awareness about the art and safe practice of contemporary hernia surgery in the region.

Hernia Essentials Basics
The Hernia Essentials (HE) Basics course is based on current international guidelines (EHS, APHS, SAGES, IEHS and HerniaSurge guidelines) on hernia management. The aim is to present a comprehensive training course for practicing surgeons on hernia management (both laparoscopic and open). A standard and uniform course content has been created that is delivered by APHS faculty at various locations within the Asia Pacific Region.
Hernia Essentials Practical
The objective is to identify, select and train selected surgeons, some of whom may be recommended by National Hernia Chapters of APHS. These surgeons would receive comprehensive training (both didactic and practical) on both approaches (Open and Laparoscopy) for abdominal wall hernias (inguinal, ventral, incisional). These hernias leaders would then serve to propagate and disseminate international guidelines based, best hernia practices within their countries and in the region.
Hernia Essentials Fellowship
Clinical apprenticeship at APHS accredited Hernia centres of excellence in the Asia Pacific region.We aim to train about 50 surgeons for the award of Diploma in Hernia Essentials of APHS from Asia Pacific region in this manner every year.
Eligibility criteria for course
Each Course module is conducted separately. A surgeon should have attended Hernia Essentials Basics course to be eligible to attend the Hernia Essentials Practical course.
Hernia Essentials Basics course is conducted at suitable locations (metropolitan university centres) throughout the Asia Pacific region. Hernia Essentials Practical course will be offered at APHS accredited Centers of Excellence in hernia repair in the Asia Pacific region.
Hernia Essentials Fellowship program will be offered at APHS accredited Centers of Excellence in hernia repair in the Asia Pacific region.

On completion of all modules, participants shall be awarded the Diploma in Hernia Essentials of APHS at a ceremony during the annual APHS congress

The Hernia Essentials course is being supported by a generous education grant from Medtronic company.
The first hernia essentials training course of the APHS was held on 22nd February at Shanghai, China. All past presidents of APHS were present to contribute and make suggestions for the first educational initiative of APHS. Course faculty from China included Prof Steven Yao, Prof Tang & Prof Ma. The course was attended by about 70 delegates and the presentations were translated into Chinese.
The second hernia Essentials training course was held at Manila, Philippines on 11th March. The local course convener was Dr Alfred Allen Beunafe. The course was held at the Philippines Center of Advanced Surgery (PCAS). Dr Anil Sharma represented the central APHS faculty and national faculty from Phillipenes were Dr Alfred Allen Beunafe, Dr Macky Faylona, Dr Henry Chua, Dr Raymund. The course participants numbered 87. An assessment test (MCQ’s) was conducted at the end of the training course.
The third hernia essentials program was conducted at University Medical Center, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam on 21-22 April 2017. This was the largest program conducted so far with 150 registered delegates.
The audience comprised a mix of faculty , residents, fellows and surgical post graduates. Some presentation slides were translated to Vietnamese for ease of understanding. The program concluded with an MCQ assessment on hernia.
A live operative workshop was conducted on 22nd April wherein TEP and Ventral hernia repair were demonstrated.
An APHS consultative group meeting was held in Bangkok on 5th July 2017 to discuss and deliberate upon the Hernia essentials program. It was decided to establish the next step in the Hernia essentials training program. The next level in the Hernia essentials training program would be tentatively titled 'Diploma- Hernia Essentials'. This training would comprise three components viz Live surgical workshop, endotraining and cadaver labs. The planned structure for this course would be LIVE surgical workshop and endotraining on day one and cadaver labs on day 2. The requirements and eligibility criteria for 'Diploma - Hernia essentials' are being worked out.
The Hernia Essentials Course was held in Beijing in conjunction with Chinese Hernia College of Surgeons (CHCS) on 3rd August 2017. APHS Training Faculty were Dr Alfred Allen Buenafe from Manilla, Dr C Tsai from Taiwan and Dr Anil Sharma from India. The local Faculty from China were Prof Chen Jie, Dr Ji, Prof Steven Yao, The course was conducted at Beijing Chao Yang Hospital and hosted by Prof Chen Jie, Director of Hernia Division Beijing Chao Yang Hospital. The program also involved Live Telecast of several Groin and Abdominal Wall Hernia Repairs.
The fifth Hernia essentials program was held at National Cancer Institute, Putrajaya, Malysia on 25th August , 2017. The program had 50 participants and 7 faculties. Three faculties were from APHS i..e. Dr Anil Sharma, Dr Allen Alfred Buenafe and Dr George Yang. The four local faculties from Malaysia were Dr Ramesh, Dr Guna, Dr Vimal and Dr Yeap Chee Loong. Two live surgeries were demonstarted during the program : TEP was demonstrated by Dr Alfred Allen Buenafe and TAPP was demonstrated by Dr George Yang. This was followed by a MCQ assessment.
The Hernia conference at Abu Dhabi was a two day event at Dusit Tani, Abudhabi on 27- 28 October 2017. On day one, live telecast of surgery was done from Max Hospital, Delhi to the NMC Royal Hospital in Abu Dhabi. The procedures demonstarted were TEP, Ventral hernia repair, Anterior component seperation for complex incisional hernia. The faculty included leading hernia experts Dr Pradeep Chowbey, Dr Davide Lomanto, Dr Anil Sharma, Dr Tim Tollens and Dr Rolf Hartung. The local faculties included Dr Anant Pai, Dr Katrak Merzeben, Dr Ahd Marzouk
There were about 80 participants in the course. The program marked commencement of educational activity of APHS building upto the 14th annual congress of APHS in November 2018 at Dubai.
The APHS Hernia Essentials Basics Course was held at Bangladesh Medical College Hospital, Dhaka on the 25th of November 2017 in association with the Hernia Society of Bangladesh. The program had 130 participants and 7 faculties. The international faculty were Dr. Rajesh Khullar and Dr. DeeprajBhandarkar. The national faculty were Prof. Motior Rahman, Prof. Sarder A. Nayeem (course convenor), Prof. AHM Shamsul Alam, Prof. AHM Towhidul Alam and Prof. ABM Khurshid Alam. The audience included a mix of faculty, fellows and surgical post graduate students. The program concluded with an MCQ assessment on hernia. A Live Workshop was held the following day conducted by the Hernia Society of Bangladesh. 4 cases were demonstrated; comprising of TEP, TAPP and ventral hernia repair. The surgeries were demonstrated by Dr. Samiron Kumar Mondal, Dr. ABM Mahbubur Rahman and Dr. Manir Hossain Khan.
The 8th Hernia Essentials program was held on 9th December 2017 at the Gateway Hotel, Mangalore, Karnataka.The event was organised by Department of Surgery, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore and the organizing chairman was Prof Harish Rao. The Hernia Essentials Basics Course is now accredited and endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. The event was attended by around 110 surgeons comprising of Post Graduates, Residents, Fellows and Consultants. The eminent faculties for this program were Dr Pradeep Chowbey, Dr Jose Macario Faylona, Dr Anil Sharma, Dr Jaideepraj Rao, Dr Alfred Augustine, Dr PK Reddy and Dr Ramesh Punjani.
